Case No.1, the Senior Capstone Project created for Cyclesteria, explores environmental degradation and human impact through a surreal investigative narrative. The installation presents a crime scene where the pollution that has overtaken the habitat of groundhogs consumes the creator of said pollution, represented by soft sculptures and cardboard figures. Hand sewn from muslin and stuffed with collected waste, the splayed figure embodies the inescapable consequences of human actions. Photographs and red-yarn connections reference an evidence board and reflect the gruesome reality of ecological crimes, reinforcing the cyclical relationship between pollution and its victims. The garbage photographed is not staged; everyday wrappers, plastic cups and cans line the roads of Marist campus and the homes of our groundhogs. I challenge viewers to consider their role in this on-going environmental crisis and the absurdity of seeking justice when the perpetrators and the victims are one and the same.
